Battery powered pumps come in handy. We lost power for a day and didn't lose any fish, fresh or salt, without having a generator.
All of these run on 2 D-cell batteries.

Lee's check (anti-siphon) valve, 1 valve $3.00
|
Check Valve / filter, PennPlax
Protect your airpump and floor if the power goes out. $2.00
|
What is a check valve? It is a valve that allows air to come thru from the pump, up
into the tank, but stops or slows the flow of water out of the tank down the tube to the pump.
Why is it important? If your air pump is below the tank, the power goes out, and the pump is no longer pushing air up into the airline,
water can potentially siphon out of the tank, down the airline, and wreck your pump, plus other minor hazards.
A check valve needs changed at least once a year, since air from your home contains dust and other pollutants that
can block it up, putting back-pressure on the pump. Always follow package directions when installing a check valve. Installed
backwards it will not do its job, and puts back-pressure on the pump, slowing or stopping airflow from the pump to the
tank. |

Undergravel filter assembly diagram from
Keeping Murphy Out of Your Aquarium Copyright 1997, All Rights Reserved.
What comes with an undergravel filter? The filter plate, lift tubes, the connectors
that mount lift tubes to the plate, air line and/or a hard air tube, (enough to get from tank bottom to gang or T valve), air stones and carbon cartridges.
Why are these all Economy undergravel filter plates? The more expensive plates often have fewer slots for water to flow
through. I have found that they do not filter as effectively in my heavily stocked tanks, and low levels of nitrite followed water changes,
regardless of gravel size. I added power filters to supplement them initially, but have been converting my tanks back to the Economy plates found on this page.
