Tests for these water quality issues:

• pH
• Alkalinity (also known as carbonate hardness, influences pH, greatly increases in the presence of lime.
• GH (general hardness - magnesium and calcium ions)
• Nitrite (toxic to fish, formed after ammonia has been processed)
• Nitrate (not toxic to fish, the end product of the nitrogen cycle. Ponds with plants may have almost no nitrate as the plants feed on it. Ponds without plants may have high nitrates, which contribute to algae problems.)
